The widely-rumored v1.1.3 update for the iPhone will once again break hacks that work with earlier firmware, according to a source that claims to have tried the leaked software. "Natetrue," the creator of iBrickr, says that v1.1.3 disables both unlocks and third-party applications that functioned under v1.1.2, most notably the common AnySIM unlocking utility. Even trying to install v1.1.3 on top of AnySIM 1.2u fails, says Natetrue.
Other unlocking techniques such as iPhoneSIMFree or the physical TurboSIM modification have not been tested, but it is believed that even if these work, it will be impossible to use alternate activation methods in the immediate future.
The new firmware does have its advantages, Natetrue notes. Aside from previously-mentioned interface improvements and increased options in Google Maps, some security vulnerabilities have been patched, reducing exposure to outside threats. The v1.1.3 firmware is also to first to have been leaked, reportedly by someone who wanted to give hackers a head-start on unlocking it. It is suggested that the final version of the update may launch as soon as this week.
